Our Story

In 2013, we purchased a 22-acre farm in Pilot Point, Texas, that was perfect for family recreation, entertaining and just a good place to chill.

Six years later, we rescued an Appaloosa stallion, a donkey, and two miniature ponies from the McKinney Animal Shelter. One weekend during this time, we rented our farmhouse out to two couples through a short-term rental company. Unfortunately, we were duped, as they turned our property over to their teenage children for a graduation party. There were over 100 kids in attendance, one of whom brought a pistol with him. Tragically, this person shot and killed our favorite pony, Happy.

While we (and several friends) informally started rescuing animals a few years before when we orchestrated the rescue of approximately 50 dogs and a few cats from a little town down on the Texas border, it was the tragedy of Happy’s death that pushed us to start a 501(c)(3) animal rescue in Happy’s honor and named it Happy FurEver!! You may have even heard of Paws & Purrs, the original name of our organization.

Throughout the years, along with our resources and funds from some wonderful donors, we have made several renovations and advancements to rescue more animals and make them very comfortable. The property has been fenced and cross-fenced to separate the rescues from the house, our pets and other visiting pets. Recently, we had six kennels and runs delivered from Pennsylvania. They came equipped with indoor/outdoor spaces for our fur family, heating and air conditioning, central drainage, washer/dryer and a small office. As additional funds become available, we intend to add more kennels, a horse barn and other improvements to further our ability to rescue. Until now, Happy FurEver was a rough semblance of a rescue operation, but today, we are thrilled to say that the Happy FurEver we dreamed of has become a reality!

Carl Hill, our full-time manager who lives at the farm, is truly a blessing! He is from Northern Ireland, and we call him our Irish Animal Whisperer. His incredible ability to train horses and dogs is quite amazing. In his earlier years, he was a jockey in Ireland, working with some of the largest horse owners and breeders in all of Ireland.

Mission Statement

To provide care and love to animals in a safe and comfortable environment. Our goal is to find the perfect home for each animal through foster care and/or adoption. For those who are basically “un-adoptable” (the elderly, physically impaired, etc.), we are prepared to have our shelter be their FurEver home, where they can live out their lives!
