Our Story

Happy FurEver is an oasis for dogs, built on compassion, intention, and the deep belief that every dog deserves to be seen, loved, cared for, and given the chance to thrive.

How Happy FurEver Came to Life

Happy FurEver began long before the land, the buildings, or even the name. It began with Jan and Tom’s lifelong commitment to caring for animals in need.

Throughout their marriage, Jan and Tom welcomed countless rescue animals into their lives. What started as a personal passion grew into a calling: to create a place where dogs searching for a new home receive more than food and shelter. At Happy FurEver, they receive individualized attention, loving patience, dignity, and room to heal.

On their 25th wedding anniversary, Jan and Tom made that vision real. They purchased the land that would become Happy FurEver: a peaceful, private sanctuary designed to give dogs space to decompress, feel safe, rediscover joy, and wait for the right family to find them.

Today, that same vision guides everything we do.

Why We Do What We Do

Happy FurEver exists to provide a different kind of rescue experience rooted in intention, not volume.

We believe dogs deserve more than overcrowded environments. They deserve a place where they are known, understood, and given the time they need to settle, heal, and regain trust; where they are not confined to small crates or kennels, but instead have acres of fenced property to chase, run, swim and play with dogs of all sizes and breeds.

Some of the dogs who come to Happy FurEver will go on to find carefully matched, loving homes. Others, especially those who are older or facing medical challenges, will remain here, living out their lives in comfort, peace and dignity.

No matter their path, every dog is treated with care and respect.

We believe in intentional care

We prioritize quality of care over quantity, ensuring each animal receives individualized attention.

We measure success differently

Success is defined by the quality of life each dog experiences and the strength of the homes we place them in.

We do this with purpose

From medical care and training to adoption and long-term sanctuary, every decision is made with the dog’s long-term wellbeing in mind.

Jo Dell Proctor

Administration Director

Jo Dell’s love for animals began as a child while spending time on her family farm in Missouri, surrounded by horses, cattle, chickens, cats, and dogs. These early life experiences created a lifelong passion for caring for animals and understanding the unconditional love they bring into our lives.

She has always had a big heart for helping others, especially underprivileged individuals and animals in need. After retirement, she considers herself truly blessed when God unexpectedly connected her with the founders of Happy FurEver. What began as a chance meeting quickly became an important part of her life.

For the past two years, she served alongside our incredible team dedicated to rescuing, protecting, and finding loving homes for animals in need.

Our Mission

Happy FurEver exists to provide care and love to animals in a safe and tranquil environment. Our goal is to find the perfect home for each animal through foster care and/or adoption. For those who aren’t suited for re-homing, we are prepared to have our shelter be their FurEver home. We believe that each dog needs the opportunity to heal, regain trust, and just be a fun and happy dog.
